Bake Sale is a performance of desperate small business; riffing on part time job experiences and the aesthetics of kitsch and consumerism in response to pressures of the competitive art world. The artist bakes cookies from scratch, advertises locally, installs a table in a gallery, and sells the work to the public. By equating artmaking and fundraising, this piece addresses the ways in which branding, regular studio practice, and sales grant feelings of artistic validity. The artist processes these insecurities in an admittedly self-centered form of "social practice."
